Our story
Makam began with one woman, a needle and thread, and the friends she loved to dress. Every piece since has been made the same way: for a real woman, with a real shape, living a real life.
Our story
Makam began with one woman, a needle and thread, and the friends she loved to dress. Every piece since has been made the same way: for a real woman, with a real shape, living a real life.
Chapter one
Long before there was a label, there was Sucheta Jayesh (Sanju) at her sewing table. She designed every piece herself and sewed each one by hand, cutting for the women in front of her: their shoulders, their waists, the way they moved through their days.
She shaped clean western silhouettes and finished them with the details she grew up with. A hand-stitched hem. A block-printed border. A neckline that remembered a kurta. Her friends wore them to work, to dinners and to weddings, and people kept asking where they were from.
Chapter two
One evening, at a gathering of friends, she opened her bag and showed them the newest designs she had made. The room went quiet. Then everyone wanted one.
Dresses were held up, passed around and tried on in the next room. By the end of the night, every piece in the bag had found a home. It was the first time she understood that what she made for her friends, other women had been looking for too.
Chapter three
Her friends would not let her stop there. They pushed her to show her work at exhibitions, so she did, with a single rail of dresses and a fitting corner.
Women came, tried a dress on and saw themselves in the mirror. Many asked for a piece in another colour, a longer hem or a softer sleeve, and she made it for them. They came back, and they brought their sisters, their colleagues and their friends. Customised, made-to-measure designs became the heart of what Makam does.
Chapter four
The women who came to her stall had something in common. They had lived, led and loved. They knew exactly who they were, and they were tired of shops built for twenty-year-olds, where trends change weekly and fit is an afterthought.
That is who Makam is for. Every dress starts with a shape, not a trend: where it should define, where it should skim, where it should simply let you move. We tell you who each piece is cut for, and if it isn’t quite right, we make it right.
A note from our founder
When I started, I was simply sewing for the women around me. I knew their shapes, their lives and the occasions they were dressing for. I wanted each of them to feel like herself, only more so.
Makam still works that way. We design for the woman, not the hanger. We name every dress after a woman who inspired it. And we never stop asking how it feels to wear.
Thank you for being part of the story.

What we believe
I
Fit comes first. Every pattern starts from a real shape, and every product page tells you who it is cut for.
II
Western silhouettes finished with the craft we grew up with: kantha stitching, block prints, chikankari and hand finishes.
III
Made-to-measure is where we began. Any design can be adjusted or cut to your measurements.
IV
Fewer, better pieces in breathable fabrics, made to be worn for years and not for a season.
How a Makam dress is made
Step 1
Each design begins on paper with a woman in mind and the shapes it will flatter most.
Step 2
Patterns are drafted and cut in breathable fabrics like linen, cotton voile and soft crepe.
Step 3
A touch of Indian craft is added by hand: a kantha hem, a printed border, a placed motif.
Step 4
Choose your size with our fit notes, or book a fitting and we will make it to your measure.
Inspired by Her
Our tagline is meant literally. Each Makam piece is named after a woman who inspired it: a friend from that first evening, a customer who came back with her daughters, a woman whose style we admire. When you wear one, you carry a little of her story.
